HOW WE KEEP OUR CHILL DURING THE REALLY CHILLY CHICAGO WINTERS

Baby, it’s F-ing Cold outside! We have been #blessed in Chicago to have some of the most bitterly cold winters in the WORLD! I do recall a point in time during the winter Olympics in Sochi where it was colder in Chicago then it was in Russia and the other day it was colder here than it was in Antarctica… Let that resonate with you for a second. The silver-lining is that Chicagoans are humbled by this experience and we tend to embrace any weather as nice weather so long as it is above 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

I can rant for days on how terrible the cold is and how my Island girl instincts just cannot comprehend this current environment, but that is not the point of this post. The point of this post is how I manage to find a little slice of paradise when the city turns to ice … Which is exactly why I am the one writing this post! Just in case you’re wondering, I hate the cold. The winter makes me super tense. It’s cute around the holidays, but January and February (and sometimes March… and April) are rough!

When I can’t sneak away on VACAY I make my own damn #beachvibes. Keep reading. 

I LOVE THE BEACH. I love the water. I love walking on the sand. I even love the inconvenient sun and sand rash I get after being out there for too long. Unfortunately, the beach is closed for about 8-9 months out of the year here so It’s not exactly my go-to hangout spot. When I need a mental escape from the winter abyss I create my own DIY beach vibes (sounds cliché, but just go with it).

 
 

STEP 1: Set the mood

I am all about music. I think that listening to different types of music apply to different aspects of my life based on what I’m trying to achieve. When I need a mental vacation to the Island of Oahu, I play some sweet, sweet Island jams. My mental vacation hotspot is Hawaii so I compiled a bunch of artists from the islands that I either stumbled upon or were introduced to me so that I can create a playlist straight out of the paradise islands themselves.

STEP 2: Well… Do you like Pina Coladas?

I sure do! I like Mai tai’s too! I’m not so big on fruity drink, but I do appreciate the instant beach feels once I get a sip of this stuff. I know what you’re thinking- “Girl, it’s too cold for frozen drinks!”. Yes, you are exactly right, but I would probably suggest drinking this indoors. If the closest body of water to you is frozen over, I would suggest drinking frozen drinks in a warm indoor environment. Also, there's something about rum that makes your insides nice and warm, but if you're not huge on alcohol, the virgin Pina Colada's pretty much have the same effect (minus the rum warming effect)!

STEP 3: get LIT

See above OR (my preferred route) pick up some candles that give off that island aroma! I’m not a big fan of sweet scents most of the time, but I do have some candles on reserve for when desperate times call for desperate measures. I’m a fan of coconut as I find it to be a bit subtler, but you can choose whatever scent rocks your boat (because of the water and beach them… you feel me?).

 
 

STEP 4: Get Coo Coo for Cocoa Butter.

We all get a little dry and scaley in the bitter cold. My skin gets patchy and rough so LOW KEY, Cocoa butter saves me during the winter months. I know what you’re saying, “Girl, aren't there other lotions out there that moisturize and have tropical beach scents?”. The short answer to that is: Yes. I do realize that there are other pineapple scented lotions out there. I just don't want to always smell like pineapples.  I use these not only to moisturize my skin, but also to lift my mood. I want to be soft and smooth and to have a subtle scent of chocolate smothered all over my body. PLUS, it reminds me that I'm forever getting ready for my beach bod and that before I attempt to workout I should try to remove my already existing stretch marks... because that makes zero sense, but that's what helps me sleep at night.

STEP 5: Eat light & bright

This is especially hard for me because I tend to fill up on hearty comfort food in the winter months, but I usually feel like crap afterwards. Think potatoes- lots and lots of potatoes. If you can swing it, try buying some fruits or eating something you wouldn’t typically gravitate toward in the winter like a bright salad, some fish tacos, or some sushi! You don’t have to do this all the time, but I noticed that this does help! I tend to go negative on the nutrients during the holiday season and very positive on the carbs, fried food, and red meat. An upset stomach and cold weather makes me extra annoyed so going for a lighter meal definitely helps me feel lighter and happier and like I'm vacationing in a place (any place) with warm climate. 

**Note: try to stick to the fresher rolls for this. The Godzilla roll is so good, but makes me feel not so good after.
